Karen Rae D’Allaird (1969- )

Following in the Brandywine tradition, Karen D’Allaird is an artist that continues to find inspiration from the rural beauty of my native Chester County, Pennsylvania. As a contemporary realist, my work threads the needle between classical realism and a lively expression of a painterly vision.  A signature style of work utilizes light and color to capture the movement, beauty, and mood of a subject.

Landscape, floral and still life are among my favorite artistic genres.  “Plein aire painting is the perfect way to capture the essence of a scene. The process of working outdoors perfectly lends itself to a more dramatic artistic outcome.”  Continuously exploring the countryside to find wonderful compositions to share.  While working on a landscape, I begin en plein aire, (for at least the first layer) it is easier  to make more accurate hue selections and  to enjoy true perspective that cannot be obtained from photo references alone.   Many times the plein aire study is finished in the studio with the help of photo references taken at the scene.

All floral and still life subjects are painted from life.  The subjects are chosen and composed to reflect everyday pleasures and the balance between the natural world and the man-made, the masculine and the feminine, color and neutrals, as well as textural interest.

Coming from a childhood surrounded by artistic influences including a grandfather who was an award-winning amateur photographer, a father who was an enthusiastic watercolor portrait painter, and even the neighbors were extremely talented professional fine artists. D’Allaird has also been greatly influenced by the works of the 19th century American masters, William Trost Richards, William Merritt Chase and Willard Leroy Metcalf who have served as my constant inspiration and instructors.  My work has been a natural progression realizing the value of creativity and individuality in art as well as the important discipline of learning technique.

I  reside in Unionville, Pennsylvania with my husband and two children. I am also  committed to art education.  I teach children and adult beginner classes at my school, Willowdale Art Academy. www.willowdaleartgallery.com
